The I.A.U. named asteroid 17823 Bartels discovered 1998 by J.M.Roe in recognition for my contributions to amateur astronomy. Making is the Key to Knowing. A telpe mirror is arguably the most accurate surface made by human or machine. Amazingly you can grind a mirror by hand and make a telpe with simple hand tools.
DetailsThe telpe-shaft 48 has a universal joint at 49 and runs in the box 50, which is movably 'mounted upon the rod 105, secured in the frame 106, which is bolted to the bed of the machine. The box is supported by the spiral spring 53, which rests on the rod 54.
DetailsOn top of the grinding tool, I loaded up 50 pounds of weights to help speed up the grinding process. This is where a beefy machine is needed. The 2" thick mirror weighs in at about 65 pounds. Add on 50 pounds of grinding weights, and you have 115 pounds spinning on …
DetailsDiscovering the Universe. The dedication of the 100-inch telpe at Mount Wilson, California, sets the stage for Edwin Hubble to prove that the universe consists of a multitude of galaxies. For a telpe, size matters. A larger mirror or lens gathers and focuses more light, allowing the telpe to see obects that are fainter and farther away.

DetailsMirror-O-Matic grinding machine. When I decided in 2009 after a ten-year break to get into mirror making again, it quickly became clear to me that I would need to construct machine, as hand grinding big mirrors is not something very beneficial for the hands of a musician.
DetailsGrinding Machine for Large Telpe Mirrors I designed and built a grinding machine for mirrors up to 42 inches [1.1m] in diameter. By slipping on and off a couple of belts, the machine can quickly be reconfigured for spinning work or for stroking work.
DetailsThe world's largest grinding machine was built. The glass company had reported that bubbles in the glass might be a problem, but the astronomers insisted on seeing for themselves. But when the disk arrived at the observatory shops in Pasadena in December of 1908, on the same day that the 60- inch mirror was placed in its mounting on Mount ...
DetailsHere is a stack of my home-made 8 and 10 inch mirror blanks. The second from the bottom is the one above. I can use the thinner blank below it as the grinding tool. UPDATE I have started rough grinding one of my home-made 10in glass blanks. Here is an action shot of me, pushin' glass. I am aiming for an f/5 mirror.
DetailsGrind with the tool on top in a to and fro pattern, overhanging each end by about 1/6 the mirror diameter. After a half dozen strokes, take a step to one side and repeat. Then spin the tool on top in the opposite direction. Repeat ad naseum. When the sound dies down, recharge with another sprinkle of grit and a spritzing of water.
DetailsI started this thread to record my building progress of a new mirror grinding and polishing machine. This machine will be capable of handling mirror sizes up to 22". I have decided that 22" is the absolute maximum otherwise becomes too cumbersome to move around. I have won 2 x 1/3 horse power single phase electric motors on eBay, at $45 each.
DetailsBy September, 1907, the world's largest telpe mirror was ready for its mount, but other equally large problems would cause further delays. (To watch a short video of Ritchey's grinding machine, now at the Smithsonian, go here. ) The majority of the massive mounting and the steel for the dome was built by the Union Iron Works in San ...
DetailsThe chips aren't too bad, and aren't really a problem at all if I am cutting disks to fuse together. If the disk needs to be chip free, I simply cut it a little oversize and then grind down the edge to size (erasing the chips along the way) with the edge grinding attachment. Here is a photo of the machine set up to cut another glass disk.
Detailstelpe mirror grinding machine based on Dennis Rech's M-o-M 20 . My Mirror Grinding Machine. For a long time I've wanted to build a machine for grinding telpe mirrors. Dennis Rech's M-o-M designs finally inspired me to just get up and do it. Over the years, I'd been collecting motors, gear boxes, pulleys, etc.
DetailsAn on-machine mirror-profile measurement system, employing a length gauge, has been developed on a grinding machine. The mirror profile was measured on machine, and the feasibility of the developed measurement system was confirmed. A measurement uncertainty of the proposed system was found to be about 0.6 μm, which is small enough to be used ...
DetailsThe telpe's massive mounting was fabricated at a machine shop also in Indianapolis. When finished in 1939, only eight observatories in the United States possessed telpes of equal or larger size. This large telpe requires solid support. The 200-ton concrete pier sits on bedrock and extends 30 feet above ground level.
DetailsGRINDING AND POLISHING MACHINES. TIlE grinding and polishing machines used by the writer are somewhat similar in principle to Dr. Draper's machine, sho.wn in Fig. 25 of his book, but are more elaborate. I shall describe here the machine used in making the 5·foot mirror, both because it embodies most of the essential features of a-grindingand ...
