Another idea I had was to use 'timing belt' material and a timing pulley to move the table. With a spring loaded idler pulley to maintain tension on the timing belt, this would provide a zero backlash table feed. However, since this is a well-used hand feed surface grinder with no money invested in it, I will stick with the rack and pinion for now.
